Mandzukic’s own goal breaks goal drought in Finals

For the first time in 12 years, a World Cup Final had a goal in regular time, thanks to Mario Mandzukic’s own goal in the 18th minute that gave France the lead over Croatia.

It took three World Cups for a Final to have a goal in the first 90 minutes. The last time this happened was in 2006 when Marco Materazzi scored a header to give Italy a partial draw against France in Germany.

Curiously, the Italian’s goal at the time was also after a set piece and occurred in the 19th minute, while Mandzukic’s own goal – the first in the history of the World Cup finals – was in the 18th minute.

For 2010, Spain got the winning goal over the Netherlands until the 116th minute, the same case of Germany against Argentina in 2014 when Mario Götze scored the winning goal at 113.

This goal, moreover, was the first own goal in the history of the World Cup Finals and was the twelfth in the tournament in Russia, the tournament that has had the most own goals of all those that have been played.
