Imperfecto Spanish: formation, conjugation, ending

Parallel actions in the past

The imperfecto can be used when two actions at the same time have occurred in the past. So while one plot was going on, a new plot started.

Mientras desayunaba, sonaba mi teléfono.(While I was having breakfast, my phone rang.)

Escuchaba musica, mientras estudiaba para el examen.(I was listening to music while studying for the exam.)

Trabayaba mientras todos dormian.

(I worked while everyone else slept.)

Habitual actions in the past

With the imperfecto you can habitual actions or, to put it another way, describe a routine. So you can use the imperfecto to describe that, for example, you used to go jogging every day or baked cookies every day.

Todos los dias comía Pizza.

(I ate pizza every day.)

Cuando era joven, jugaba muchos juegos de ordenador.(I played a lot of computer games when I was young.)

En Navidad, veiamos películas navideñas.(On Christmas we watched Christmas movies.)

States and descriptions in the past
