Heart patients should take blood thinners as usual

Reports about serious illnesses from Covid-19 can worry heart patients – and lead to wrong reactions. The Heart Foundation warns of this. And gives advice in case of an emergency.

Heart patients should definitely continue taking their anticoagulant medication during the corona pandemic. It is therefore not advisable to stop taking blood thinners yourself out of uncertainty because of the assumed complications in the event of infection with the virus.

Be sure to inform your doctor about blood thinners if you are infected with Covid-19

This is emphasized by the German Heart Foundation. What heart patients who take anticoagulants should do: If they contract Covid-19, they must inform their treating physicians that they are already taking medication to prevent thrombosis.

According to the foundation, this prevents unwanted double treatment with anticoagulants. According to the experts, doctors see a connection between coagulation disorders and serious courses of Covid-19 – «with complications such as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and death».

Corresponding reports led to uncertainty, especially in patients with heart disease, which are associated with an increased risk of embolism and infarction and who therefore have to take blood thinners permanently.

Keep your heart fit with running, cycling or gymnastics

As a preventive measure, the experts recommend doing sport to keep your heart fit. Running, cycling or gymnastics promote blood circulation and vascular elasticity and are said to reduce the risk of a severe course of Covid 19 disease if you become infected.
