SWITZERLAND — The FIFA has announced that it will receive this Monday at its headquarters in Zurich to a delegation from Amnesty International (AI) to address the situation of migrant workers in Qatar in relation to the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

The meeting, the statement said, «will give AI the opportunity to deliver a petition asking FIFA to address this matter, followed by a discussion with experts from FIFA and its Qatari partner to examine the progress made to date and the challenges still pending».

«We remain fully committed to ensuring the protection of workers involved in the construction of the World Cup and we trust that the tournament will also serve as a catalyst for positive and lasting global change in the host country,» said the director of the Division of Responsibility FIFA Social and Education, Joyce Cook.

The FIFA stresses that the World Cup «has already contributed significantly to improving working conditions in the region and it is clear that Taste It is on the right track, having introduced far-reaching labor reforms and having made substantial progress, in a relatively short period of time”.

The debate -he points out- will focus especially on the situation of workers in the service sector, especially with regard to the hotel industry.

«Given the proximity of the tournament and the progressive decrease in the magnitude of the works, the efforts of the FIFA and its local partners in terms of worker welfare have been increasingly targeting this area, which will play a fundamental role during the competition,» he explains.

In this regard, an audit and inspection program has been developed for the hospitality sector in Qatar, as well as «due diligence measures for service companies operating at FIFA tournament venues.»

Dialogue with experts from International Amnesty on labor issues will make it possible to delve into this type of initiative within the framework of the continuous collaboration of the governing body of soccer with human and labor rights organizations with a view to FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022he concludes.
