What pimples can say about your health

Even the vainest person will not die from one or the other pimple. But: If the unwelcome impurities keep appearing in the same places on the face, they can at least say something about general health and any illnesses. And sometimes they show unfavorable habits. FITBOOK learned something surprising from a dermatologist!

Some people get a bigger bump on their face every few months. For others, pimples are more likely to be part of the mirror image, and suspiciously always in the same places – which can reveal something about their health.

pimples in the cheek area

As the Munich dermatologist Dr. medical Timm Golüke explains in an interview with FITBOOK that areas on the face that are prone to pimples can sometimes be linked to other abnormalities in the body or in terms of health. For example, acne on the side of the cheeks and in the neck area often indicates hormonal imbalances. The reason would be an excess of the (“male hormone”) testosterone, which can usually occur in women due to the menstrual cycle. For this reason, such causes of pimples – for example during puberty – are treated with the administration of the contraceptive pill, a hormone preparation.

And in general, people who are prone to pimples should only consume cow’s milk and the like sparingly, as the hormones it contains can promote impurities.

Sometimes, however, the wrong habits are (only) to blame for the pimples. On the other hand, the consequences for health can be particularly unpleasant, for example in the case of perioral dermatitis, popularly known as «stewardess disease». If several pimples suddenly appear around the mouth overnight, this can indicate active over-care. The nodules and pustules are a symptom of the fact that the skin has been overwhelmed with too many and/or frequently changing cleaning and care products. «And the disease often stems from incorrect use of creams containing cortisone,» says Golüke.

Perioral dermatitis is uncomfortable and can last for several weeks. Sufferers should stop creaming and smearing immediately and consult a dermatologist for treatment.

Pimples on forehead or chin

… you have transported there yourself in case of doubt! These are the parts of the face that you typically (usually unconsciously) touch, for example while conversing or concentrating. Or do you make sure you never rest your chin on your hand or scratch your forehead?

The problem: Your fingers carry germs from the keyboard at work, contact with money, your cell phone, or whatever else you touch during the day. That’s why you should wash your hands before eating – and actually never touch your face! A rule that we should have internalized by now in the wake of the Corona crisis. The sebaceous glands are also very active on the forehead in particular, which, in combination with pathogens, promotes the formation of pimples. By the way, there are also many sebaceous glands on the nose, so please do not fiddle around unnecessarily.

pimples on the eyebrows

Eyebrow pimples are primarily a mechanical problem with no immediate health implications. Eyebrows that grow out of line are often plucked. And that can promote inflammation of the follicles, especially if you don’t work properly. Skin, brows and tweezers should be cleaned before going to work. Accordingly, hygiene must also be a top priority for all other depilation methods (on the face). Otherwise you don’t need to be surprised about pimples, pimples or nodules.
