In some Western works of art from centuries ago we find images strange flying objects which, today, we easily identify as UFOs. We cannot know what these drawings really are, but it is curious to know another culture that also represented in his art and described in his literature artifacts that could cross the heavens. Join us to discover the Vimanas, the Hindu flying machines that some believe UFOs and others pure imagination.
Vimanas, Hindu flying machines
The word «Vimana» means «chariot of the gods» or «heavenly chariot» and are used according to the Sanskrit tradition for transportation of the gods through the sky. For this reason, many temples in southern India are finished with small constructions called Vimanas. As a dome-shaped hat crown the buildings dedicated to the godsperhaps waiting to transport them from one place to another.
Many stories in Sanskrit literature, written more than 2,000 years ago, speak of these mythical flying machines known as Vimanas, and the defenders of the Ancient Astronaut hypothesis They wanted to see the proof in them that in ancient times, also India was visited by astronauts from other planets.
Sometimes these mysterious vehicles or chariots, according to Hindu mythology, were used in war, and the Ramaiana describes the vimana of flowers that the demon Ravana possessed and with which he could fly and on which Rama climbed to travel with all his might. His court:
«Rama ordered the vehicle to depart and the incomparable chariot of Kuvera rose towards the very bosom of the heavens. The chariot flew like a great cloud pushed by the winds.
Among the various descriptions of Vimanas, we know that the sun god travels in a luminous and other gods did it in vimanas drawn by animals or that had wheels. They come in very different sizes and shapes: large, small, with the appearance of chariots, floats, thrones and even complete buildings.
Defenders of the ancient astronaut theory claim that Sanskrit literature’s descriptions of the vimanas are very similar to those made by people who say they have seen UFOs and from there they deduce that India was visited by extraterrestrials in the past, so these vivid descriptions are not the fruit of imagination, but the result of real observations.
Detractors claim that the vimanas, the flying chariots of the gods, do not appear that many times in Hindu literature and that poor translations of the texts have been made, so the ufologists theory is based on falsehoods. What do you think? Are the vimanas the fruit of imagination or do you believe, like some, that they are representations of UFOs that arrived on Earth millennia ago?
