Voltage-gated ion channels are located only at the nodes of Ranvier between the Schwann cells and their myelin sheath. Thus, an action potential is renewed only at each node, with far fewer ion channels needing to be opened and closed compared to non-myelinated axons, resulting in faster conduction of excitation.
