New York is considered the state with the largest city of the USA, New York City. The state is located in the north-east of the United States and has the capital Albany. In this section we tell you facts about New York State.
New York size
The state of New York is 141,300 square kilometers large, which roughly corresponds to the area of the German federal states of Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and North Rhine-Westphalia combined.
New York is the 27th largest state in the United States and consists of two areas: Upstate New York and Downstate New York. The cities north of New York City are Upstate New York while New York City and Long Island form Downstate New York.
New York geography
New York is bordered to the north by the Canadian provinces of Québec and Ontario, to the east by Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont, and to the south by Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Among the most important mountain ranges in New York are the Appalachia, a 500-million-year-old fold mountain range, and the Adirondacks. The highest mountain in the state, the 1629 meter high Mount Marcyis in the Adirondacks.
The most famous lakes are the Lake Erie in the west and the Lake Ontario in the north-west. The most important rivers are the Hudson River, the Saint Lawrence River, the Susquehanna River, and the Delaware River. Waterfalls, which I’m sure you’ve heard of, are for example these niagara falls or the Taughannock Falls.
An island, long Island, is also a part of the state of New York. It is approximately 120 miles long and 12 to 19 miles wide and includes much of New York City.

New York has 19.4 million inhabitants, of which approximately 8.8 million live in New York City. The capital of the state of New York, Albany, has a population of approximately 100,000. New York is the fourth most populous state in the United States after California, Texas and Florida.
Of the residents, about 57.2% are white, 17.5% African American, 18.4% Central or Latin American, 8.2% Asian, and 1% Native Americans.

The largest group of residents in New York are residents Italian descent with 12.8%. The group was followed in 2014 by the Irish (11.6%), Germans (10%), English (5%) and Poles (4.6%).

Reports from 2010 state that more than 6,000,000 people are members of the Catholic Church, followed by Orthodox Judaism with almost 600,500 members, Islam with almost 400,000 members and the United Methodist Church with around 330,000 followers.
New York time
New York is in the time zone Eastern standard time. This means that the time is usually offset by 5 hours from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-5). As in Germany, there is a time change of one hour to daylight saving time in New York. Therefore, in the winter months, the shift is UTC -4.
So if you want to calculate the time difference between Germany and New York, simply calculate German time minus 5 hours.
When it is 4 p.m. in Germany, it is 11 a.m. in New York.
New York landmarks
New York State has many attractions to offer. Niagara Falls, Thousands Islands with Boldt Castle, Hyde Park and alone in New York City, the largest city in the state, there is still a lot to discover. However, we will go into more detail about this in the later part of this article.

The Thousand Islands are known for their beautiful scenery and close proximity to the water. However, they offer not only their beauty, but also many opportunities for water sports or camping.

Indian Summer

With a population of 8.8 million, New York City is considered the largest city in New York and even the largest city in the 50 states. It was created in 1624 when the Dutch settled in what is now New York.

New York City names
The city of New York City has many nicknames by which it is known.
big apple
For example, one of these names is «big apple«. This nickname is due to horse racing, the winning prize of which was a large apple. Therefore, it is a symbol of the greatest and best that can be achieved.
The City That Never Sleeps
Another name for New York City is «The City That Never Sleeps«. This name comes from the fact that lights are always on in New York City and there is a great nightlife even after dark.
A lesser-known nickname for NYC is «Gotham«. This one comes from the 1940’s when Manhattan was changed to Gotham in the Batman Comics to keep the location vague.

Probably the most famous sight in the USA is the statue of Libertyin English Statue of Liberty called. On October 28, 1886, it was given to the Americans as a gift from France. She stands in New York Harbour and measures 93 meters from the ground to the torch.

Broadway in NYC
Broadway is known as that heart of the American film industry and is located in the borough of Manhattan. It consists of many theaters where you can see musicals or other plays.

Brooklyn Bridge in NYC
Built from 1869 to 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was the only connection between Brooklyn and Manhattan. Crossing the bridge offers a unique view of Manhattans skyline.
To disprove rumors about the bridge’s stability, PT Barnum walked 21 elephants across the Brooklyn Bridge in 1884.

Long Island and the Hamptons
Long Island, which together with New York City forms Downstate New York and is 200km long in total, is the biggest island of the United States.

There are numerous in New York and especially in the Manhattan borough skyscraper to see. skyscraper means in German skyscraper. It’s the tallest skyscraper in Manhattan One World Trade Center, which was rebuilt to 417 meters after the terrorist attack of September 11, 2011. Another very famous one skyscraperwhich is part of New York’s skyline, is that Empire State Building. The famous New York skyline is best admired from the borough of Manhattan.
the Trinity Church was considered the tallest building in New York in the 19th century at 86 meters. However, this church is now surrounded by skyscrapers.
