The school subject mathematics – overview
Mathematics lessons begin in elementary school and, along with German lessons, are one of the subjects that accompany you the longest in everyday school life. It is important not only to learn the basics of mathematics, but also to understand them, as the material is edifying.
No matter what grade you are currently in, will support you in achieving your learning goals and help you prepare for the next exam.
The free app gives you the opportunity to create index cards and notes directly from your documents. In addition, you can use the StudySets we have created to find all of the topics that are included in the syllabus for the subject of mathematics – regardless of whether you are looking for information on basic arithmetic, triangular determinations or derivation rules. The StudySets were prepared for you by a multi-professional team and contain everything you need to know – also for your final exams.
The individually tailored learning plans in the app ensure better motivation and learning organization.
The math curriculum
The aim of mathematics lessons is for students to develop an understanding of mathematics and thereby be encouraged to think logically and solve problems. In addition, students learn to work in a structured and concentrated manner and to transfer certain processes to other problems.
Mathematics teaching topics
Since there are a lot of different topics on , you will find a short selection of important topics for mathematics in the following section.
algebra
Algebra is one of the four major areas of school mathematics, along with analysis, geometry and stochastics. In principle, you will find all mathematical basics under the heading Algebra – regardless of whether you want to learn about the different types of basic arithmetic, set theory, percentage calculations or about equations and inequalities.
In this sub-area you will mainly deal with numbers and calculation rules. Since the material in mathematics is progressive, you should have a good command of algebra in order to master the learning content in other areas of school mathematics.
You can also click into explanations of, for example, «Basic arithmetic», «Terms and term transformations», «Equations» and «Inequalities» to learn more about algebra.
geometry
Already in elementary school you take the first path to geometry. However, one question remains – Why is geometry even taught in school?
Perhaps you would like to work in the logistics sector later, work as an engineer or study to become an architect? For example, the subject provides you with the necessary basic knowledge and promotes logical thinking. The geometry not only opens up opportunities for you in terms of professional training, but also helps you to develop spatial imagination, which you can also use in everyday life, for example when furnishing your room with new furniture.
What are you taught in geometry at school? You will learn to measure and calculate angles, distances and straight lines and to carry out complicated constructions with compasses and rulers.
Geometry also deals with the nature of bodies. This means that you will learn how certain properties of these bodies, such as circumference, volume or surface area, are calculated using geometric formulas. In the upper level you will be shown, among other things, how to solve straight line and plane equations. You will also be introduced to trigonometry.
Take a look at the explanations on «Geometric figures», «Body (spatial geometry)» and «Trigonometry» to get more insight into these topics.
Analysis
In the subject area of analysis, you will, to put it simply, deal with functions, their properties and their limit values.
For example, you will learn about linear functions, fractional and trigonometric functions, and draw function graphs. You will also be explained how to move, compress, stretch and mirror the different function types.
You will also learn about differential calculus and integral calculus, as well as discussing curves. You will then deal with derivation and integration rules and examine certain functional properties such as zeros, high and low points, slope behavior or curvature behavior when discussing curves.
In the sub-area of analysis, the main focus is on “deriving” and “integrating”. But what is analysis used for anyway?
This is essential, especially in technical professions. It can be used, for example, to calculate speeds in mechanical engineering. It is also needed in materials technology. With their help, the best possible packaging size can be found here and material costs can be saved as a result. The analysis is also used wherever the growth behavior of companies or risk assessments in the financial sector are concerned.
So you can see that the field of application of analysis is very diverse.
Click on the «Functions» explanation to learn more about this topic. You will also find explanations of «differential calculus», «integral calculus» and «curve discussion» if you are looking for detailed information on these topics.
stochastic
Stochastics is also taught in the school subject mathematics – but what exactly is meant by stochastics and what will you learn in class?
Stochastics includes the sub-areas of statistics and probability theory and always examines random events, so to speak. This means that their task is to categorize random processes into uniform models and then to examine their potential outcomes. The central question here is: How probable are the different outcomes of these models?
This may sound a bit confusing at first glance, but it isn’t at all. Just think of weather forecasting, climate research, medicine or gambling. Probability theory or statistics is used in all of these areas. E.g. What is the probability that it will snow next week?, What is the probability that a classmate in your class has the same birthday as you? And what is the probability that a person will win at gambling?
While probability theory only records the probability of certain events, statistics analyzes this data and draws logical conclusions from it.
