Examples of local adverbials
An example of a local adverbial is the marking in the following sentence:
Lisa and Tom go every day to school.
In this example, «to school» is the local adverbial because it is more specific about where Lisa and Tom go each day.
Over there sit a lot of people in the cafe.
This example sentence contains two local adverbials: «over there» and «in the café» are both places.
The local adverbial is also called circumstance determination of place or adverbial determination of place/direction.
Determine local adverbials
You recognize a local adverbial when you ask for this part of the sentence.
The following question words will help you to recognize a local adverbial:
Lisa is from Berlin to Munich drawn.
Where from did Lisa move to Munich? – from Munich
Where did Lisa move from Berlin? – after Berlin
In this example sentence, both «from Berlin» and «to Munich» are adverbial clauses of place that are combined with the question words «Wohin?» and from where?» can be requested.
Outside is it raining.
Where is it raining? – outside
«Outside» is the local designation in this sentence since the question «Where?» answered.
Tom throws the ball 20 metres far.
How far does Tom throw the ball? – 20 metres.
In this example, a spatial extent is given, because «20 meters» answers the question of how far Tom throws the ball.

Adverbial local clauses usually consist of one local adverb or become through a preposition initiated. So there are some signal wordswhich show you that it is an adverbial designation of place or direction.
