Law: profession, course, market and salary –

The Law course is, even today, one of the most sought after graduations by students entering Brazilian universities. The status of the profession dates back centuries and made baccalaureate a traditional choice in the country.

Until the mid-1820s, students who wanted to study law had to leave Brazil to take the course, and it was common for them to go to the University of Coimbra, in Portugal. With the independence of Brazilthe need arose to create Law courses in the country.

The first Law course offered in Brazil began its classes in 1828, in Largo do São Francisco, in São Paulo, where the Law course of the University of São Paulo (USP) currently operates. Two months later, graduation was inaugurated in Olinda, at the Monastery of São Bento. From then on, other institutions emerged offering the course and Law became popular, allowing the entry of people from different social classes.

the law course

The law course is a bachelor’s degree with a minimum duration of five years (or 10 semesters). The graduation has a very broad theoretical basis, since the future bachelor must have knowledge of sociological, philosophical, anthropological, economic and cultural aspects, in addition to having command of the Portuguese language.

Leaving the general disciplines, Law has several areas of activity that are studied even in graduation. They can be fleshed out in specializations later. The student will see basic contents of:

  • Administrative law;
  • Civil right;
  • Constitutional right;
  • Labor Law;
  • Business Law;
  • Criminal Law;
  • Tax law.

In addition to more specific sectors, such as Environmental Law, Consumer Law, Election Law, Sports Law and International Law.

Bar Exam

Upon graduation, law students receive the title of bachelor. However, to work as a lawyer and in other areas, it is necessary to have the title of the Brazilian Bar Association Examination (OAB), a complex step responsible for assessing the discipline and ethics of future professionals, being divided into two phases.

The first phase of the OAB Exam consists of 80 objective questions involving the disciplines of Ethics, Philosophy of Law, Constitutional Law, Human Rights, International Law, Tax Law, Administrative Law, Environmental Law, Civil Law, Statute of the Child and Adolescent , Consumer Law, Business Law, Civil Procedure, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Labor Law and Labor Procedure.

Don’t stop now… There’s more after the publicity 😉

Candidates who reach 50% of the grade are approved for the second stage. The final phase is composed of practical-professional activities. First, the candidate must know the areas of law well to choose one of the following: administrative law, civil law, constitutional law, labor law, business law, criminal law and tax law. There is the writing of a professional piece, such as an opinion or a petition, and four practical questions about situations to be resolved.

Job market

The labor market for the Law professional is very vast, with the role of Lawyer being the best known. The bachelor can also work as a Prosecutor, Auditor, Public Defender, Delegate, Judge, Judge, among other positions.

It is very common for students to graduate and focus on studying for public tenders, as the public sector employs many professionals in the field of law and offers high salaries.

The salary of a legal professional varies according to the time of formation, sector of work (public or private) and function performed. Lawyers earn an average salary of BRL 2,882, according to the Catho website, while magistrates (judges and appellate judges) earn much more than that and receive assistance such as housing, food, books and others.
