INTRODUCTION

Writing a book is no longer something impossible and so complicated with the internet and access to technology, anyone with creativity and content can publish a book. Even more so with the growing alternative of digital books, known as e-books, which have made prices more affordable and do not require paper, and can be read on smartphones (cell phones), tablets or specific devices such as e-readers.

During student or academic life there was certainly the production of a work or project that could be improved and turned into a book. The starting point will be something you have and needs to be shaped so that it can become a paperback book or an eBook, depending on your interest.

To write a book you need an idea. You can be inspired by everyday things, the newspaper, TV, the internet or even other books. But you can’t use the same idea. You have to differentiate and personalize the idea so that your book doesn’t look like someone else’s. A book needs a title that attracts the attention of a readership, a dedication, a summary, parts divided into chapters.

This research is bibliographic and qualitative, justified by the importance of writing a book and publishing it.

DEVELOPMENT

The course completion thesis (TCC), sometimes called course completion work, interdisciplinary graduation work, final graduation work, graduation project, experimental project or course monograph, with their respective acronyms, is a type of academic work in the Brazilian educational environment widely used in higher education and technical courses, as a way of carrying out a final assessment of students, which takes into account the diversity of aspects of their educational training.

A master’s thesis is a type of writing or composition, written in prose or presented orally, on a topic on which arguments, evidence, examples, etc. must be presented and discussed. In university circles, it is equivalent to the thesis, differing, however, from the latter by the volume of material: the dissertation would be material that involves a few pages (up to the limit of 100), while the thesis would label texts that exceed that number. From the qualitative aspect, the dissertation presupposes the ability to apply a method of analysis and interpretation, while the thesis implies the originality of the theme or approach in the light of which it is exposed and discussed.

A doctoral thesis is an intellectual proposition. Currently, it is mainly considered academic work that presents the result of complex and in-depth investigation into more or less broad themes, with a defined theoretical approach. «It is a text that is characterized by the defense of an idea, a point of view. Or by questioning about a certain subject. The author of the dissertation text works with arguments, with facts, with data, which he uses to reinforce or justify the development of their ideas.” A course conclusion thesis, a master’s thesis, a doctoral and post-doctoral thesis can take advantage of the core and be transformed into parts and each part divided into some chapters.

It seems obvious, but the text must be readable. That is: do not print the text in Gothic font size 8, with margins of half a centimeter on a page the size of a postcard. Nobody will read it. Exercise common sense. A font in Arial or Times style, size 12, on A4 paper, with margins 3 cm on the left, 2 on the right, 2 on the top and bottom. Don’t worry about mistakes. Do not use excessive adjectives to describe nouns. When you’re done, it’s time to correct the errors and grammar. Always have a dictionary and thesaurus with you when writing. You may have to check words, find meanings, or look for synonyms to use. You may want to edit sometimes. To publish a book, you just need to have a story to tell and the dedication to write a lot and write well. If you lack motivation – which is also essential to get started, take the tip that Daniel H. Pink gives in his work Drive: set your objective, understand that you are the one in control of your life and set out to become relevant in whatever matters. proposes to do.

Becoming a writer may seem difficult, but it’s actually more about attitude. Being a writer means knowing how to use your senses, observing what is around you clearly. Publishing a book can be the fulfillment of a childhood dream, the immense desire to share ideas, the beginning of a promising writing career, the obligation to inform people, the completion of an academic work or simply a personal achievement. Ultimately, whatever your objective, publishing a book is an important milestone in a person’s life, which can change their trajectory.

According to popular culture, human beings have their mission on earth: plant a tree, have a child and write a book. In independent publishing, you decide what your book will be like and everything is done at your own pace. You will be responsible for the entire review, editing, layout process, defining the value of each work and how it will be publicized. The book will be released the way you want, without the interference of publishers.

Independent writers are not always able to attract the attention of publishers, who always prefer to make safe bets on already established authors. Furthermore, of the manuscripts that reach editors, only a few are approved. By choosing to make the publishing process independent, the author does not need this approval (but it is always cool to ask the opinion of friends, mother, uncle, dog to know how the book will be accepted by the public).

Most independent writers do not have the money to pay for the entire process. Any author can self-publish a book. Being an independent author is the best option. Henry Alfred Bugalho is an independent author who achieved the feat of self-publishing several books and making one of them, the New York travel guide for cowhands, a bestseller. Intelligent and articulate, he also runs the literary magazine Samizdat.

You can even publish your book for free thanks to various platforms on the internet. If in the past it was very difficult to have a work approved by the editor of a major label, this barrier has fallen. Today, you can publish your book, both in print and in ebook format, at no cost.

People have a very small capacity for concentration. Don’t forget this sovereign truth as you choose every word in your book, especially in the first chapter. Don’t expect patience from your readers. If the first few paragraphs aren’t able to hold their attention, you run a serious risk of being left behind for much more dynamic literature.

A book is a technology. This object, so banal to us, did not always have the shape we know. And there are criteria that establish differences between printed materials. For example, UNESCO defines a book as a printed book with a core between covers that has more than 49 pages. If this is not the case, we will not have a book, but a leaflet.

Not only UNESCO, but other bodies and institutions define what the structure of a book should be. Generally, it is considered a printed book, despite the increasingly strong existence of the e-book. According to the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT), a book has, in addition to the text itself, paratexts, which are elements that come before or after the main text.

Let’s look at the most important elements, which tend to appear in the works of many writers.

Front and back cover (or fourth cover)

The cover protects the book, but it also serves to seduce readers. It’s no surprise that many publishers invest in beautiful, eye-catching, elegant and visible covers. Generally, they are made of harder, more resistant material, with a heavier weight than the core, precisely to keep it protected and preserved.

Since covers exist, they are also often used as support for some texts that help sell books: texts on the back cover, intriguing excerpts from the work, author information, etc. The cover itself serves to identify the work, author, publisher and other interesting information.

Cover page

The title page and the false title page (optional) provide information about the work that repeats the cover, but can also add more data, such as edition or printing number. On the back of this sheet, there is usually a catalog card, usually made by librarians. With this, it is possible to classify the work, register its non-transferable number (ISBN — International Standard Book Number) and gather data, such as credits from publishing professionals.

Dedication and thanks

Who doesn’t dream about that? One day, dedicate the work to your children, your parents, your friends. These are sheets that serve to honor, thank, explain. Likewise, the epigraph sheet, optional, but which many people use to transcribe an inspiring excerpt from another work. A poem, a phrase, a philosophical excerpt can appear, showing that one book leads to another.

summary

It is common and recommended to follow the summary. It is a type of diagram that shows the chapters and sections, with their titles and page numbers. With it, you can find parts of the work almost directly, without having to leaf through randomly.

Do not confuse summary with index. The indexes come at the end of the work, and not all of them have them. They tend to be based on themes or subjects covered in the book.

Preface and presentation

It may be important to present the work to the public, do a study on it, show what it came from….
