In 1502, the Spanish arrived, the first Europeans to reach Belize. In the 18th century, there was colonization of the country by the Englishthus becoming the only country in the Central America continental colonized by the English.
Independence
Its independence was only achieved in 1981, but it is still part of the British Commonwealth, an association of England with its former colonies.

Dispute with Guatemala
In 1859, a dispute over territory began between Belize and Guatemala. The two countries spent the entire 20th century disputing, but in 2002 they reached an agreement, and the borders remained the same as at the beginning of the dispute.
